Rehaunted Launch Review

Mixed reception, a short detective loop, and who should buy on day one versus who should wait for patches.

Launch Review

Rehaunted launched on 14 September 2026 as Cauchemar Studio’s first-person psychological detective horror game on Steam. You play Connor Raines in a house where a young woman has been found dead, evidence contradicts itself, and the game refuses to stamp an official answer. That pitch is unusual and specific. The launch question is whether the build matches the pitch.

This is a buying guide with launch context, not a recap of a secret plot. For how to play, use Getting Started and the investigation walkthrough. For whether the story “has multiple endings,” see endings explained — short version: official count unconfirmed, conclusions are player-built.

Launch snapshot

  • Platform: PC Steam only at launch. Consoles are later if they happen, not a day-one SKU.
  • Mode: Single-player. Full controller support.
  • Length: About two to three hours.
  • Price: Around $7.99 USD, with an introductory −10% to about $7.19 until 28 September 2026. Confirm live regional pricing on Steam.
  • Reviews: Mixed — about 40% positive from a small sample of roughly 15 user reviews. That sample is too small to treat as a final reputation. It is large enough to treat as a warning light.
  • Achievements: 22 on Steam.
  • OS: Windows 11 required. Minimum i5-8400 / Ryzen 5 2600, 16 GB RAM, GTX 1070 Ti-class GPU. Recommended: RTX 3070. Full table: system requirements.

Cauchemar presented as a small team shipping a debut. Wishlist numbers reported around launch were high relative to studio size. High wishlist plus Mixed is the classic indie squeeze: more first-session eyes than a quiet $8 horror usually gets, and less room to hide polish problems.

What the design is doing well on paper

The investigation fantasy is coherent. UV flashlight, camera, magnifier, walkie-talkie, and evidence board are not a random gadget pile. They match a house that lies. The magnifier-as-aperture idea — paranormal and some clues only through the lens — is a real differentiator next to ghost-hunt games that want three matching proofs and a correct answer.

The radio partner is the other differentiator. Dialogue choices that challenge your theory turn a walking sim into an argument. You are alone in the rooms and not alone in the interpretation. Character framing for Connor and that voice is on the players hub.

Tone is sold honestly: abandoned house, never empty, tall supernatural woman in the trailer and gameplay captures, psychological rather than combat. If you want a 15-hour Metroidvania, this is the wrong store page. If you want a compact case you can finish in an evening and argue about after, the shape is right. How to investigate is the page that respects that shape.

What Mixed reviews are actually flagging

A 40% score on a tiny sample usually means friction, not “the idea is worthless.” Known launch complaints this wiki can state without inventing patch notes:

  • Radio timer with missing options. A timed dialogue prompt that does not show the full set of choices can brick a conversation that the design says matters. That is not a nitpick in a game about branching talk.
  • Radial menu stuck. When the tool wheel eats input, investigation and survival both stop. Full controller support is listed; a stuck wheel still ruins a hunt.
  • Entity can spawn in locked rooms. Horror needs rules. If a lock is not a rule, players stop trusting space. How to survive treats that as a live risk, not as flavor text.

None of those prove the writing failed. They do prove a day-one buyer is also a tester. Workarounds and the “check Steam discussions” habit live on tips and known bugs. When Cauchemar ships notes, they go on the updates hub.

This review will not invent additional crash lists, performance charts, or quoted Steam reviews we did not verify. If your GPU is at the 1070 Ti line, assume you should watch footage (the seven-minute IGN capture is on Getting Started) and check discussions after install, not before the refund window closes.

Time, price, and Steam’s refund clock

Two to three hours is inside Steam’s two-hour refund window if you rush, and outside it if you look carefully. That matters more than the dollar off. A completionist who UV-scans every wall plus a hunt death plus a stuck menu can burn the refund clock on a game this short. Play the first session with the Getting Started checklist, not with a “I’ll refund if the ending is bad” plan — endings will not give you a chart to judge in 90 minutes anyway.

At about $8 (or $7.19 in the intro window through 28 September 2026), the price is aligned with the runtime if the loop functions. It is not aligned if the radio or the wheel regularly fail. Price is not a moral argument for skipping patches; it is a reason Mixed stings less than the same score on a $40 title.

Windows 11 only will annoy households still on 10. That is a hard filter, not a settings tweak. No console at launch is another hard filter. Family Sharing is listed if you are buying for a household that already lives on Steam.

Who should buy it now

Buy now if you want a short detective-horror evening, you like building a theory the game will not grade, you can tolerate indie launch bugs, and you meet Windows 11 / 16 GB / 1070 Ti-class specs. Read how to investigate and how to survive the same day you install so the magnifier and the locked-room warning are in your head before the first hunt.

Wait if missing radio options would infuriate you, you need a lock to mean “safe,” you refuse Mixed scores on principle, or you were hoping for a partner in the house. Rehaunted is single-player. Wait for launch notes to show a patch that names the wheel, the radio, or the spawn. Then buy on the next discount after the intro window if you still care.

Skip if you need an official ending list, a long campaign, or combat. This is not that product.

The Guides Hub is the practical next click after this argument. The store page remains the live score. Mixed on day one is a snapshot, not a eulogy — but it is a snapshot you should believe enough to play carefully, refund-aware, and patch-aware.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Is Rehaunted worth $8 at launch?

Yes if you want a 2–3 hour detective case and can live with Mixed polish. No if radio bugs or unsafe locked rooms would ruin the evening. See tips and known bugs.

Why is the Steam score Mixed?

About 40% of a very small sample (roughly 15 reviews) are positive. Treat it as a polish warning, not as a final verdict, and watch updates as the sample grows.

Will it come to consoles?

Not at launch. PC Steam only on 14 September 2026. Plan for Windows 11 now; treat consoles as later, unconfirmed timing.

Does a bad ending mean I should refund?

The game may never give you an official answer. That is design, not a missing disc. Read endings explained before you judge the last ten minutes.

Where should I start if I already bought it?

Getting Started for the checklist, then the investigation walkthrough. Use how to survive as soon as the hunts begin.
